How to take care for money plant

Almost every plant lover or gardener has money plants in their garden. Money plant is also known as Devil’s Ivy, Golden Pothos, Ceylon Creeper and Silver Vine. These tropical plants are well known as low-maintenance plants. Pothos have a round flat penny like look, that is why it is named as money plant. However, it is believed from the ancient period that the money plant attracts positive energy, brings peace or prosperity.

The scientific name of the money plant is Epipremnum aureum or Epipremnum pinnatum. These plants have many variations. This plant belongs to the Araceae family. Money plant has rich green coloured leaves, extremely shiny stems and branches. With proper care a typical money plant can live upto 10 to 20 years.

6 tips to care for money plants

  • Potting and repotting: Choose a pot according to your plant’s size, small pot can constrict your plant’s growth. Make sure that the pot you are using has a drainage hole in the bottom of the pot. You may need to re-pot your plant in future. The suitable time to re-pot is in spring and summer. 
  • Soil: Money plants need a good quality well drawing potting mix that contains a proper mix of sand, perlite or lava rocks, and fertilizer. 
  • Water: Water is essential in growth of a plant at its best. However, money plants do not need too much water to stay healthy. Water it every 1 to 2 week when the soil is dry. Always remember to not let your plant’s soil water clog. 
  • Sunlight: Money plants flourish in medium sunlight. Direct sunlight can burn the leaves of your plant. These plants can also tolerate low light but too low light can damage your plant’s health. Therefore, it is best to put your plant in partial or indirect sunlight. 
  • Fertilizer: Feed your money plant with a moderate amount of water-soluble fertilizer once in a month. In spring and autumn feed your plant every 2 to 3 weeks.  
  • Propagation:  You can propagate your money plant by cutting the stems. The nodes of a plant contain cells that promote growth. Thus, you can cut near the nodes of the plant.

Money plant’s problems:

  • Yellow leaves indicate water issues. Either your plant is overwatered or you are not using distilled water. 
  • Losing variegation is a sign that your plant is not getting enough light. 
  • Root rotting indicates overwatering. 
  • Brown tip leaves are a sign that your room temperature is not suitable for your plant. Splashing the leaves with some water may give them energy.

With proper love outdoor money plants flourishes whitish-pinkish colored flowers, which is extremely gorgeous. It is also studied that money plants purifies the air and eliminates the toxic elements in the air. You can place it on the window panes, table tops or also hang it on the window frame. Money plants can be toxic if ingested. Money plants can be a good and valuable gift option.
