How to create the perfect marsh garden - a complete guide

The elegance and beauty of a marsh garden cannot be explained in just words. Bog garden is also known as marsh garden. The structure of a marsh garden based upon slow draining and mushy soil. Since the land is permanently soggy, and a swallow stream goes through it, it creates a situation which pretty much every plant who is fond of moisture loves. A bog garden may naturally exist, or can be created artificially in your backyard or the side of a pond.

Follow these 7 steps to create the ideal marsh garden   

  • Choose a space where the depth can be approximately 60 cm. You can choose your backyard, garden, or pond surrounding area. 
  • That space must be accessible to water and also have the ability to hold up water.  
  • Then apply a slight layer of clay in 10 to 12 cm of that space as the base of your bog garden. Clay will help with holding the water. 
  • Then put a 10 cm layer of small stones. 
  • Then pour 1:1 mixture of the soil and compost in the remaining void. 
  • You can surround your bog garden’s perimeter with rocks also. 
  • After all this, add up the plants you want to grow in your marsh garden.

Plants you should include in your marsh garden 

Any moisture loving plant can be best for your marsh garden, especially which are found in the pond side. Marsh plants are basically divided into 3 types of plants, according to how much depth a particular plant needs.

  • First category includes those plants who love to stand in 5 to 10 cm of water. Plants including, cyperus sp, sweet flag, pink morning glory and others. 
  • Second category of marsh plants includes those who love to stay their roots in moist soil. Plants such as cotton grass, canna indica, dwarf bamboo and others. 
  • The third category includes daylilies, alocasia sp, filipendula, and others. These plants live a little above the waterline.       

These plants will enhance the beauty of your marsh garden. You should try different categories of plants in your marsh garden. If you have a small area, create a marsh garden with dwarf marsh plants in different varieties. Besides, if you have a large area, do add robust growing plants, this will add background effect. Marsh gardens will help in enhancing the beauty of your garden.
