Here\'s how to make organic holi colors at home

Holi, the festival of colors, is about to come. This colorful spring festival is mainly an ancient festival of Hinduism, but now it has also become popular in the other parts of Asia. The celebration of this occasion with our loved ones has always been something we Indians are delighted to do.

In the hindu culture it is believed that holi is an occasion when people use color to show and spread their love. Due to the fact that this festival has been celebrated from the ancient period, the colors used back then were typically made using organic materials. In this modern time, people are using gulaal and synthetic colors.

The synthetic colors are made with chemicals, and do you know how much they can harm your skin? The chemical solvents that are used in the colors can cause skin allergies and rashes. So, in this year, make organic colors at home and celebrate this spring festival.

1. Red color

There are many ways to make organic red gulaal. Here are two ways in which you can make red gulaal:

  • Take some red hibiscus flowers and dry them until they turn flaky. Grind them in a mixer to get the powdery form. Then add some rice flour or red sandalwood powder to increase the quantity as per your need. You can also use red china roses in place of hibiscus.
  • You can make red colored gulaal with the help of turmeric powder and lemon juice. As lemon juice is acidic, mixing lemon juice in turmeric powder will make the turmeric turn red in color. Then dry the mixture in a well ventilated room with no direct sunlight.

2. Magenta color

Take sliced or shredded beetroots and soak them into water, this will give you the perfect magenta color. You can boil them, or you can leave the beetroot soaked in water overnight, this will give you the deep magenta color. After that strain the beetroots add some rose water. Add corn flour or any talcum powder into the mixture and mix it well. Dry the mixture in sunlight or microwave.

3. Purple color

Take some black carrots and grind them in a mixer. Add some corn flour or any preferable talcum powder into the carrot mixture. You can add some rose water into the mixture for a mild fragrance. And then let the mixture dry.

4. Yellow color

To make an eye-catching yellow color, take gram flour and turmeric powder in a ratio of 1:2. Remember to properly mix them with your hands, to make sure they are blended evenly. You can use a strainer for a more smoother powder.

5. Green color

To make a green color, take some spinach and make a smooth paste with the help of a mixer. Add some rose water and corn flour into the green paste. Mix them properly to make sure there are no lumps. Then let the mixture dry. Another way of making green color is to take henna powder and mix with corn flour. Also remember henna mixed with water can stain the skin.

So, those are the five colors that you can make at home with the help of organic materials. To have a safe holi, avoid using any synthetic colors that are readily available on the market and instead make your own organic holi colors.
